Head of Remote – The Job Title That’s About To Go Viral?

You know a trend is more than just a fad and here to stay, when your feeds start filling up with job postings for that trend.  Not much more than a decade ago, there was no such thing as a Social Media Manager, now there’s not only SMMs, but Heads of Social, Social Specialists and a whole range of jobs for experts focusing specifically on just one social platform – in fact there are entire job boards dedicated specifically to recruiting and filling social media management roles.

Fast forward to 2020, and Head of Remote is on the cusp of following suit.  Facebook advertised for a Director of Remote Work just a few weeks ago – they’re looking for “a strategic thinker who understands distributed and virtual teams” and “is an outstanding relationship builder and a change agent”

There’s only a sprinkling of jobs currently for experts to specifically manage transitions to remote, with many organizations currently giving this role to existing members within their HR department, but the complexity and diversity of skills required to effectively manage a transition to remote – mean it won’t be long before a Remote Consultant or a Head of Remote is as commonplace as Head of Social is now.  The reality is, that the skills required to help transition companies to remote are such a unique combination of change management, strategic planning, relationship building, real estate management, digital transformation and human resources pro that many businesses are as yet ill-equipped for the role.
